A tall skinny man walks purposefully against the weather. He strides across the square, shoulders hunched, elbows tucked in and a tuft of bright red hair escaping from beneath his hood. He isn’t the only one braving the wind and rain today. A group of twenty-something girls are huddled under an awning, examining a map, and business men, trench coats flapping furiously, are hurrying across the pavement to one of the cafes; desperate for their daily coffees.
The young man stops in front of the historic building and lifts his face up in the pelting rain. This is his only day in Brussels, and it’s with satisfaction that he stands there, his sweater soaked through, and takes in the architecture of the building in front of him.
He counts to sixty and decides that that’s long enough, and turns towards the nearest exit of the square. One of the girls calls to him for directions, but he shrugs and continues on. Both lost, but in different ways, and in different languages. On another day he might stop and make stilted conversation, maybe ask one of them to dinner, but today he had one goal, and he’s already seen it.
